Flash Mobs : Philly Murals

Posted by Elizabeth Devereux

Writing about flash mobs the other day got me thinking about public murals, such as Philadelphia’s Mural Arts Program.  I’ve blogged about Philly’s murals before in Art Around Every Philly Corner, and, although I hadn’t thought about it before, maybe flash mob performances are the performing arts’ murals…

They are entirely public and shared artistic experiences; they make use of spontaneity and surprise to titillate and entertain us; they tell stories; they transform the mundane into the beautiful; they celebrate and honor our past, our communities, our shared humanity.

Most important of all, the flash mobs and the murals alike allow us to experience beyond what we already know.  They invite us to think about all that we do not know and all that we have not experienced.  It is up to us to be brave enough and patient enough to accept this invitation.
